Hip-hop dance became widely known after the first professional breaking, locking, and popping crews formed in the 1970s. All of these early substyles were brought about through a combination of events including inspiration from James Brown, DJ Kool Herc's invention of the break beat, Don Cornelius' creation of the TV show Soul Train, and the formation of street based dance crews. Events such as these were succeeded by the production of several films and international competitions which contributed to introducing hip-hop dance outside of the United States.

Taking the best of styles shown on TV, from professional Hip Hop crews, and seminars across the country, the Hip Hop program at the Dancer's EDGE provides students with a dance genre like no other. Music is fresh and upbeat, just like the movement, and the pace is often fast and aerobic.
